The Quest for Consistency: Ashwin Looks at the RCB Setup

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season hurtles toward the playoff stages, the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), find themselves in a position of strength, sitting comfortably second on the points table. With seven wins from 11 matches and a league-leading net run rate, the franchise appears to be the team to beat. However, even in a juggernaut of a side, critical analysis is necessary to ensure the path to glory remains unobstructed. Veteran cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the delicate balance RCB must strike as they prepare for a high-stakes encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Jitesh Sharma Dilemma

While the team’s overall performance has been commendable, Ashwin has pinpointed the form of wicketkeeper-batsman Jitesh Sharma as the most significant hurdle for the team. Once a mainstay for the Indian national side, Sharma’s form has dipped drastically during the 2026 campaign, creating a vacuum in the lower-middle order that RCB has struggled to fill.

The statistics are stark. In nine innings across 11 matches, Sharma has managed a paltry 82 runs. His average stands at a meager 9.11, accompanied by an uncharacteristically low strike rate of 115.49. For a player known for his aggressive finishing, he has faced 71 deliveries while managing only six fours and five sixes. This lack of impact has drawn concern from experts who wonder if the team’s continued faith in him might be tested as the tournament reaches its business end.

Ashwin noted during a discussion with ESPNCricinfo, “Look, RCB have one issue, which I think is Jitesh Sharma’s form. He was an incumbent keeper-batsman for India, and he’s lost his place. The entry point of Jitesh Sharma is something that they don’t have too many choices with. Because everyone in the top four is scoring runs, including Patidar.”

Resilience in the Face of Pressure

Despite the individual slump of their wicketkeeper, Ashwin was quick to praise the resilience shown by the RCB lineup. He referenced their ability to stay competitive even in daunting chase scenarios, such as their recent game against LSG. Even when faced with overwhelming required run rates, the RCB batting unit has demonstrated the depth and temperament that define champions.

“They were so far behind the game against LSG, and yet they were so close from knocking that off,” Ashwin remarked. “I would say most teams, 100 for 4 chasing 13/14 an over would be reeling at that point of time. And RCB was, and they still found a way to get as close as they did. And I’m thinking they’re still a very good side.”

Strategic Adjustments and Future Outlook

Looking ahead to the remainder of the tournament, Ashwin suggested that while the batting core remains robust, the team management might consider minor tactical shifts if they feel the need to bolster other areas. He specifically mentioned the possibility of introducing Jacob Duffy to strengthen the seam attack, though he stressed that the team is currently in a very comfortable position.

“They’ve got options. I think they can also mull around the option, if Phil Salt is not going to be coming back. They’ve still got some options to beef up that bowling. Maybe Jacob Duffy is also coming in to supplement the seam attack. I don’t suggest they do that, but they are sitting in a very, very pretty place at this point of time,” he explained.

Ultimately, the consensus remains that RCB is a formidable unit that may not need to change much to succeed. The psychological advantage of being the defending champions plays a significant role in their confidence. As Ashwin aptly put it, the team must focus on not succumbing to internal pressure. “They won a title, they’re looking like a strong side. To me, RCB are going to be telling themselves, ‘We are still a great shout to try and defend this title. Why really fix something that isn’t broken?'”

The Road Ahead: Clash with KKR

The defending champions are set to face the 2024 winners, the Kolkata Knight Riders, on May 13th. This crucial match, scheduled at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium in Raipur, serves as the final designated home match for RCB. While RCB looks poised for the playoffs, the stakes remain high for KKR, ensuring that the atmosphere in Raipur will be electric. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if the RCB management chooses to persist with their current combination or if they will heed the call to experiment as the pressure mounts.
