The Future of Test Cricket: High-Stakes ICC Meetings Ahead

The global cricketing community is turning its attention toward a series of crucial meetings scheduled by the International Cricket Council (ICC) this month. With the sport at a crossroads, officials are set to deliberate on the future trajectory of the World Test Championship (WTC) and the potential for long-awaited developments in bilateral relations between arch-rivals India and Pakistan.

Scheduled Meetings and Strategic Planning

The ICC’s governance calendar is packed with significant dates. Before the main board assembly, the Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) is slated to hold a virtual meeting on May 21. Originally intended for Doha, the venue shift underscores the ICC’s adaptability to regional dynamics. Following this, the board will convene in Ahmedabad on May 30 and 31, coinciding with the final weekend of the IPL 2026 season. These discussions are part of a standard but essential planning process intended to shape the landscape of international cricket for years to come.

Amidst these logistics, there remains uncertainty regarding the physical attendance of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Due to ongoing geopolitical sensitivities, it is highly probable that Naqvi will participate in the Ahmedabad meetings via virtual channels rather than traveling to India.

The Roger Twose Working Group and WTC Expansion

A central focus of the upcoming talks is the structural evolution of the World Test Championship. Last year, the ICC established a specialized working group led by former New Zealand batter Roger Twose. The mandate for this group was to evaluate and suggest improvements to the current WTC format. One of the primary recommendations under consideration is expanding the tournament from its current nine-team structure to a 12-team format. Such a move would be a massive step toward inclusivity, potentially incorporating nations like Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Afghanistan into the championship cycle.

The India-Pakistan Test Dilemma

Perhaps the most electrifying topic on the table is the possibility of reviving Test cricket between India and Pakistan. It has been over 18 years since the two nations faced each other in a Test series, with their last encounter taking place during Pakistan’s tour of India in 2007-08. Since then, political tensions have largely relegated their rivalry to ICC tournaments and multi-nation events.

However, recent signals suggest a thaw or at least an openness to dialogue. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has publicly stated that Pakistan is willing to play Test cricket against all member boards in the next Future Tours Programme (FTP). While no official bilateral series has been greenlit, the ICC’s platform provides a rare space to bridge the gap between these two powerhouse cricketing nations.

Debating the One-Test Series Proposal

In addition to expansion, the ICC is scrutinizing the potential introduction of one-Test series. Currently, WTC rules mandate that every series must consist of at least two Test matches. Proponents of the shift argue that one-Test series would provide smaller cricket boards with financial relief, lower travel costs, and more flexible scheduling. Conversely, purists and many experts contend that a single Test does not accurately reflect the depth and consistency of a team’s skill set, suggesting that longer series remain the gold standard for evaluating talent.

Looking Toward 2027 and Beyond

As the WTC moves through its fourth cycle, the current structure is expected to remain largely intact through the 2027–29 period. With the current FTP concluding next March and the next WTC final set for England in June 2027, the decisions made in the coming weeks will be critical. The ICC is also expected to convene again in July during the annual general meeting in Edinburgh, following the conclusion of the Women’s T20 World Cup, to finalize the vision for the sport’s future. Whether these meetings result in a historic breakthrough for India-Pakistan cricket or a broader modernization of the WTC, the cricketing world remains on high alert for official announcements.
