A Season to Forget for the Super Kings
The 2026 Indian Premier League season will be remembered as one of the most challenging chapters in the storied history of the Chennai Super Kings. The campaign concluded on a somber note for the yellow army, as they suffered a demoralizing 89-run defeat at the hands of the Gujarat Titans in match number 66 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This loss, their third consecutive setback, served as the final nail in the coffin, officially eliminating the five-time champions from the playoffs race.
With a record of six wins and eight defeats, the team finished seventh on the points table, joining the Lucknow Super Giants and the Mumbai Indians as early exits from the tournament.
The Ashwin Perspective: Time for a Tactical Evolution
Ravichandran Ashwin, the legendary Indian all-rounder and former CSK stalwart, did not mince his words when analyzing the team’s downfall. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Ashwin emphasized that the franchise must move past the traditional reliance on the MS Dhoni era to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving landscape of modern T20 cricket.
“This is not Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. Not at all. That time has changed,” Ashwin remarked. He urged the management to accept that while success is the goal, it will require a patient, systematic rebuilding process rather than relying on past glories.
Investing in Quality and Variety
At the heart of Ashwin’s critique is the need for a comprehensive squad overhaul. He specifically pointed toward the deficiency in the bowling department, which proved to be the team’s Achilles’ heel throughout the season. “Honestly, I will say this openly, CSK has to invest in quality. They have to invest in quality cricketers. I mean, make a quality team. With experience. Bowling experience. Variety in fast bowlers. Variety in spinners. A team has to be formed in a good way,” he stated.
Ashwin’s assessment highlights a common theme in the modern IPL: depth in both pace and spin is mandatory for success, especially when playing on diverse surfaces across the country.
Positive Notes Amidst the Struggle
Despite the overall failure of the squad, Ashwin was quick to identify individual bright spots. He praised the fighting spirit of hard-hitting middle-order batters Shivam Dube and Kartik Sharma. Dube, in particular, was highlighted for providing the team with some much-needed offensive momentum.
Regarding the young Kartik Sharma, Ashwin noted a rare technical ability that is becoming increasingly scarce in the current era. “Kartik Sharma has that ability. He plays the spinner a little late, he plays inside-out shots, he uses his feet in front. Today’s batters, if you count them on one hand, how many have the ability to use their feet while batting?”
The Dhoni Conundrum
The 2026 season was a historic anomaly for the Chennai Super Kings, as it marked the first time the iconic MS Dhoni did not participate in a single match. Plagued by a persistent calf strain that hampered him from the start of the tournament, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter remained on the sidelines for the duration of the campaign. His absence, both as a leader on the field and a finisher with the bat, left a void that the team struggled to fill under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
As the franchise looks toward IPL 2027, the primary challenge for the management will be balancing the legacy of their most successful period with the urgent need for a fresh, balanced, and competitive squad. The road ahead for Chennai will require difficult decisions, but as Ashwin suggested, the path to reclaiming the title starts with an honest assessment of what is missing in the current lineup.
