Arshdeep Singh Struggles in IPL 2026: Fatigue or Form? Rayudu and Boucher Weigh In

Arshdeep Singh‘s IPL 2026 Woes: A Case of Fatigue or Faulty Lines?

Arshdeep Singh, once hailed as India’s most reliable left-arm pacer in T20 cricket, has endured a season to forget in IPL 2026. Despite Punjab Kings (PBKS) finally breaking a six-game losing streak on Saturday, Arshdeep’s performance offered little cause for celebration. With an economy rate of 17.33 in that match and no opportunity to bowl his final over, the spotlight has intensified on his prolonged dip in form.

Rayudu: Lengths, Not Lack of Skill

Former India batter Ambati Rayudu has pointed to technical flaws as the root cause of Arshdeep’s struggles. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut, Rayudu emphasized the importance of line and length, particularly in T20 cricket where margins are razor-thin.

“I just think his lengths [are the problem],” Rayudu said. “He’s not someone who should be bowling a lot of short deliveries.”

Rayudu stressed that Arshdeep’s effectiveness has historically come from full deliveries — yorkers in the death and driven lengths with the new ball. He noted that the rare boundary off Arshdeep’s fuller balls was the cover-driven first delivery of his spell, implying that his control hasn’t deserted him entirely.

“Even in the death, he should be bowling yorkers,” Rayudu added. “His short ball… he doesn’t have a great bouncer at the moment, maybe because of his body being tired or he doesn’t have the same juice as what he did a few months back.”

Rayudu’s verdict is clear: Arshdeep must recalibrate his lengths and stop relying on short-pitched deliveries that lack sting.

Boucher: The Fatigue Factor

On the other side of the argument, former South Africa wicketkeeper and current PBKS mentor Mark Boucher believes the issue is less about technique and more about tiredness. After being India’s second-most important fast bowler at the recent T20 World Cup — behind only Jasprit Bumrah — Arshdeep has been in constant demand.

At the World Cup, he picked up 9 wickets in 8 matches at an impressive economy of 8.46, playing a key role in India’s championship triumph. But in the current IPL season, his numbers have slipped: 14 wickets in 14 games at an economy of 10.20. He’s one of only two bowlers this season to concede over 500 runs — the other being CSK’s Anshul Kamboj, who, notably, has 21 wickets to show for his workload.

“I think it’s just being tired [after the T20 World Cup] and this month being the IPL, and he had to play in this. That’s the reason why he’s like that,” Boucher said. “At some stage, it has to catch up with the players. It’s just natural.”

Boucher also highlighted the lack of rotation for Indian players in the IPL compared to overseas stars. Unlike international recruits who can be rested or rotated, Arshdeep is a non-negotiable in PBKS’s XI — a reality that amplifies his physical and mental load.

A Pacer Under Pressure

  • Arshdeep was India’s primary death bowler during the T20 World Cup win.
  • His IPL 2026 economy is over 10 — a significant jump from previous seasons.
  • He’s struggled with consistency, regardless of PBKS’s team form.
  • Both Rayudu and Boucher agree: he’s not the same bowler he was a few months ago.

While Rayudu leans toward technical correction, Boucher advocates for empathy — recognizing the toll of back-to-back high-pressure tournaments. Both, however, agree on one thing: Arshdeep must rediscover his rhythm.

What Lies Ahead?

With PBKS hanging on to playoff hopes, Arshdeep is expected to feature if the team qualifies for another match. His next appearance could be his last chance to salvage some pride from a season that’s fallen well short of expectations.

Whether it’s fatigue, flawed execution, or a mix of both, the challenge remains the same: regain control, trust his skill set, and bowl the lengths that once made him India’s go-to man in crunch moments.

The juice may have dulled, but the talent is still there. The question is whether Arshdeep can tap into it before the season ends.
