The Pressure Mounts Ahead of the IPL 2026 Playoffs
The stage is set at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh for what promises to be an electrifying playoff encounter. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) are bracing themselves for a fierce battle against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), with a spot in the final on the line. However, amidst the tactical preparations and the excitement surrounding the knockout stages, former Indian cricket team batter S Badrinath has cast a spotlight on an area of concern for the Royals: skipper Riyan Parag.
Analyzing Riyan Parag’s Form and Fitness
Rajasthan Royals have successfully navigated their way to the playoffs for the fourth time, a testament to their resilience throughout the league stage. Their path was solidified by a hard-fought victory over the Mumbai Indians in their final group fixture. Yet, the focus remains firmly on the performance of the captain. Riyan Parag, at 24 years old, has found himself at the center of a debate regarding his contribution to the team’s campaign.
Statistically, Parag’s season has been underwhelming. In 12 matches and an equal number of innings, he has accumulated 272 runs. While a strike rate of 152.80 is respectable in the modern T20 era, an average of 24.72 and only two half-centuries in the entire season do not paint the picture of a dominant middle-order anchor. More concerning, perhaps, is his ongoing struggle with a hamstring injury.
The Badrinath Verdict
Speaking on Star Sports, S Badrinath did not mince his words when dissecting the Royals’ prospects. He highlighted a dual problem of form and physical condition that could hinder the team during the business end of the tournament.
“Honestly, he is the weak link for the Rajasthan Royals,” Badrinath stated. “His batting form has been low throughout the season. And he is struggling with an injury in the last two games, which is clearly visible. He is unable to bend down on the field. So he is struggling with both fitness and form.”
However, Badrinath also offered a nuanced perspective, acknowledging the unpredictability inherent in cricket. He noted that despite the physical limitations, the pressure of a big game can sometimes spark a resurgence in a player who has been under fire. “He could come good at the right time. Beware of the injured player in big matches is a famous saying in sports,” he added.
Assessing the Broader Team Dynamic
Beyond the captain, the spotlight has also shifted to opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal. While Jaiswal began the season with promise, his consistency has waned in recent matches. Badrinath believes much of the criticism directed at Jaiswal is contextual, driven by the exceptional standards set by his opening partner, Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
“His form has been worrisome only if you compare it to other top players,” Badrinath explained. “But he has given decent performances, and it’s not his worst season. But because Vaibhav Suryavanshi is at the other end, Jaiswal is also getting judged by Suryavanshi’s standards.”
Badrinath remains confident in Jaiswal’s caliber, suggesting that he possesses the talent to excel at the international level. “In any other country, Jaiswal would be in the national T20I team. It’s only because he’s in India that he isn’t getting opportunities. But he can be expected to deliver come the big game.”
The Path Forward for Rajasthan
The Rajasthan Royals find themselves in a precarious yet opportunistic position. The management will need to decide how to best utilize a captain who is visibly struggling with movement while keeping the morale of the squad high. The upcoming clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad will serve as the ultimate test of their depth and tactical flexibility.
As fans and experts alike turn their eyes toward New Chandigarh, the narrative of the ‘weak link’ will either be silenced by a captain’s innings or will become a focal point of a post-match post-mortem. Regardless, the intensity of the IPL 2026 playoffs ensures that every flaw is magnified and every individual effort carries the weight of a franchise’s ambition. The Royals must now prove that they are more than the sum of their individual parts and that they possess the collective strength to overcome these hurdles on the road to the trophy.
