In a thrilling encounter in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), Saif, Sohan star as Bashundhara Strikers secure important win by defending their total against a resilient Dhaka Leopards side. The 31-run victory at the ULAB Cricket Ground showcased the Strikers’ ability to handle pressure, recover from early setbacks, and deliver under tight circumstances through disciplined bowling and stellar batting partnerships.

Early Pressure and a Stunning Recovery

The match began with Dhaka Leopards winning the toss and electing to field first, a decision that initially looked vindicated. The Leopards’ bowling attack put on an exhibition of disciplined line and length in the early overs, putting Bashundhara Strikers on the back foot immediately. The Strikers suffered their first blow when opening batter Imran Uzzaman was dismissed for just 10 runs, falling victim to Arafat Sunny. With the score at 12 for 1, the pressure began to mount.

Things went from bad to worse shortly after, as Azmir Ahmed was trapped leg-before-wicket (lbw) by Hasan Murad for a duck. This double blow left Bashundhara Strikers reeling at a precarious 13 for 2 inside the first eight overs. The Dhaka Leopards were firmly in control, and the Strikers desperately needed a partnership to stabilize their innings and keep their hopes alive in this crucial encounter.

The Monumental Saif-Sohan Partnership

What followed was a masterclass in rebuilding an innings. Saif Hassan was joined in the middle by captain and wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan. The duo showed immense maturity, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. Initially, they played with extreme caution, absorbing the pressure, respecting the good deliveries, and rotating the strike to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Once they found their rhythm, both batsmen began to accelerate, gradually shifting the momentum back in favor of the Bashundhara Strikers. Together, they stitched together a magnificent 148-run partnership for the third wicket. Saif Hassan was the standout performer of the day, anchoring the innings with a brilliant knock of 95 runs off 112 deliveries. He fell just short of a well-deserved century, but his innings laid the foundation for a competitive total.

At the other end, captain Nurul Hasan Sohan played a crucial supporting role, scoring a fluent 58 off 66 balls. His leadership and composure at the crease allowed Saif to play his natural game, ensuring that the Leopards’ bowlers could not build on their early breakthroughs.

Late Onslaught Pushes Strikers to 251

Following the departure of the two well-set batsmen, Bashundhara Strikers needed a late flourish to ensure they posted a challenging target. Al-Amin stepped up to the plate, playing a crucial cameo of 37 runs from just 30 deliveries. His quick-fire innings ensured that the momentum generated by Saif and Sohan was not lost in the death overs.

Ziaur Rahman added a valuable 15 runs off 11 balls, while Aminul Islam chipped in with 11 runs off 7 deliveries. Nahidul Islam remained unbeaten on 11 from 6 balls, helping the Strikers reach a competitive total of 251 for 9 in their allotted 45 overs.

For Dhaka Leopards, Iftakhar Hossain Ifti was the pick of the bowlers. Despite the Strikers’ recovery, Ifti managed to wreak havoc in the death overs, claiming four wickets for 25 runs in his brief three-over spell. Alauddin Babu also bowled well to pick up two wickets, while Arafat Sunny, Hasan Murad, and Sheikh Parvez Jibon took one wicket apiece.

A Nightmare Start for Dhaka Leopards

Chasing a target of 252, Dhaka Leopards needed a solid start but instead faced a top-order collapse. The Strikers’ bowlers hit the ground running, putting the opposition under immediate duress. Zakir Hasan was dismissed for a duck, failing to open his account. Shykat Ali soon followed, scoring just 8 runs before being sent back to the pavilion.

The collapse worsened when Zawad Abrar was also dismissed early, leaving Dhaka Leopards struggling at a dismal 16 for 3 within the first 4.3 overs. The Strikers’ opening bowlers utilized the early moisture and movement perfectly, putting the Leopards’ chase in serious jeopardy from the outset.

Ifti and Moin Lead a Valiant Fightback

With the top order back in the shed, Iftakhar Hossain Ifti and captain Mohammad Mithun tried to steady the ship. However, Mithun could not convert his start, departing for just 9 runs. Former national team captain Mominul Haque then offered some resistance, scoring 30 runs, but he was unable to find the fluency needed to keep up with the required run rate.

Despite the lack of support from the top order, Ifti continued to fight valiantly. He played a superb knock of 70 runs off 82 balls, hitting two boundaries and three massive sixes. He was joined by Moin Khan, who played an incredibly aggressive innings to bring the Leopards back into the contest. Moin smashed a quick-fire 57 off just 46 deliveries, a knock punctuated by nine fours and a six.

The partnership between Ifti and Moin injected sudden hope into the Leopards’ camp. The run rate began to climb down, and for a brief period, an upset seemed to be on the cards. However, the turning point of the chase came in the 31st over when Ifti was finally dismissed, leaving the Leopards’ tail exposed.

Spinners Wrap Up the Victory

Following Ifti’s departure, the Leopards’ lower order could not sustain the momentum. Alauddin Babu played a brief, explosive cameo of 14 runs from just 5 balls, but his efforts were in vain. The Strikers’ spinners, led by Nahidul Islam and Sunzamul Islam, bowled with exceptional control and variation to dismantle the remaining batting lineup.

Both Nahidul and Sunzamul picked up three wickets each, systematically cutting off any scoring opportunities and wrapping up the innings. Dhaka Leopards were eventually bowled out for 220 runs in 39 overs, falling 31 runs short of the target. This clinical bowling performance capped off an outstanding all-round display by Bashundhara Strikers, securing them a crucial win in the tournament.
