Yo Mahesh appointed TN head coach; Sandeep Patil named Mumbai mentor

Former Tamil Nadu seamer Yo Mahesh has been appointed the state side’s head coach for the 2026-27 domestic season. The 38-year-old will take charge of both the red-ball and white-ball teams after overseeing Tamil Nadu’s Under-19 teams in the previous season.

Yo Mahesh replaced M Senthilnathan and M Venkataramana, who had split coaching duties in the 2025-26 season. Winless after the first four rounds of the Ranji Trophy, Tamil Nadu brought in Venkataramana as their white-ball coach, and restricted Senthilnathan’s role to the Ranji Trophy. Tamil Nadu ended up missing the knockouts in all of the Ranji Trophy, 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy, and the 20-overs Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Yo Mahesh’s appointment was confirmed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the TNCA on Wednesday. J Hariesh, who is the head coach of Lyca Kovai Kings in the TNPL and assistant batting coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL, will assist Yo Mahesh in the white-ball leg of the domestic season.

Yo Mahesh had retired from all forms of cricket in 2020. He ended his career with 108 wickets in 50 first-class games to go with 93 wickets in List A cricket at an average of 24.67. In the IPL, he represented Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings.

Sandeep Patil appointed Mumbai mentor

Sandeep Patil, the former World Cup winner, has been appointed Mumbai’s team mentor for the upcoming domestic season. Patil, 69, had represented India in 29 Test matches and 45 ODIs between 1980 and 1986. He scored 216 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 90 in India’s run to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 1983. After ending his playing career, Patil coached the India A team and Kenya in international cricket.

Omkar Salvi, meanwhile, has been retained as Mumbai’s coach for a fourth successive season. Salvi recently won back-to-back IPL titles with Royal Challengers Bengaluru as their bowling coach.

This development brings in fresh faces to lead the teams, with Yo Mahesh and Sandeep Patil set to make a significant impact in the upcoming domestic season.
