IPL 2026: Delhi Capitals Boosted by Starc and Ngidi Return

A Turning Point for Delhi Capitals

The Delhi Capitals (DC) find themselves at a critical juncture in the 2026 Indian Premier League season. Having utilized 20 different players throughout the campaign—a rotation strategy only outdone by the Mumbai Indians—the Capitals are finally looking to stabilize their squad. As they prepare for their upcoming fixture against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the return of key overseas talent offers a glimmer of hope in what is essentially a must-win situation.

The Impact of Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi

Bowling coach Munaf Patel has emphasized that the time for experimentation is over. With the team sitting in seventh place on the points table, having secured four wins from nine matches, the focus has shifted entirely to results. The potential availability of Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi to lead the pace attack is a significant boost for the franchise.

Mitchell Starc, who joined the squad in late April, made an immediate impact against the Rajasthan Royals, claiming three wickets in his debut outing. Munaf Patel has hailed the Australian speedster as the ‘captain of the fast bowlers’, noting his ability to hit the ground running without needing a settling-in period. Complementing him is Lungi Ngidi, who was in stellar form—collecting seven wickets in seven matches at an economy of 8.70—before being sidelined by a head injury on April 25. Having successfully completed the mandatory six-day protocol, Ngidi is now 100% fit and ready to regain his place in the side.

Strategic Adjustments and Overseas Balance

Managing the four-overseas-player limit has been the biggest headache for the DC management. Munaf Patel explained that the team initially relied on local Indian bowlers like Auqib Nabi and Mukesh Kumar to allow for a more balanced batting order. However, the lack of success with that tactical structure forced a shift in strategy. Now, with the bowling unit reinforced, the Capitals are looking for consistency.

“Lungi and all bowlers are 100% fit,” Munaf confirmed. “A wicket in the first six overs makes a big difference. That is why bowling in partnerships becomes very important.” Aside from Sahil Parakh, who remains out due to injury, the Capitals are looking to maintain a settled XI, with Pathum Nissanka likely to retain his spot following a promising performance in the previous outing.

Spinners and Pitch Conditions

Despite the game being held at their home ground in Delhi, the Capitals are realistic about the track. While the presence of world-class spinners like Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel is a massive advantage, Munaf Patel downplayed expectations of a crumbling, spin-friendly surface. “If the wickets are slow, it actually benefits us because we have quality spinners,” he noted. “But I don’t think the wickets will be as slow as people expect. They might slow down slightly, but not significantly.”

The Road Ahead

For Delhi, the math is simple: they need to win every remaining match to keep their playoff qualification hopes alive. Having failed to string together more than two consecutive wins all season, the pressure is immense. Munaf Patel is adamant that the team has moved on from their previous loss to CSK. “Confidence always comes from winning. We have already moved on from the previous result. It is better to forget it and move forward with the right mindset,” he added. With their premier fast bowlers finally reunited and fit, the Capitals hope that Tuesday’s clash will serve as the catalyst for a late-season surge.
