IPL 2026 Under Scrutiny Following Security Reports
The glitz and glamour of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 are currently being overshadowed by growing concerns regarding the integrity and security protocols of the tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially acknowledged reports of several anomalies involving the conduct of players, team officials, and even team owners, leading to fears that the sanctity of the world’s premier T20 league is being compromised.
The ACSU Raises Alarm
The Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has been working tirelessly to monitor the proceedings of the ongoing season. Recently, the unit raised significant red flags regarding the presence of unauthorised individuals in highly sensitive areas. According to reports, these unidentified persons have been spotted in team hotels, traveling on team buses, and—most concerningly—gaining access to the dugout during live matches.
These restricted zones, collectively known as the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA), are strictly regulated to prevent any potential malpractice or illicit influence. The breach of these zones is a direct violation of the league’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
BCCI Confirms Investigation into Anomalies
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that the ACSU has formally submitted a report detailing these procedural lapses. In a statement, Dhumal expressed the board’s commitment to restoring order: “The Anti-Corruption and Security Unit has flagged certain anomalies and submitted a report about unauthorised persons being seen in the dugout, team bus, and team hotel during IPL matches. There are certain protocols under PMOA that need to be followed, and the BCCI will be telling the franchises to be mindful of the SOPs so that the sanctity of the tournament is restored.”
A Final Warning to Franchises
The BCCI appears to be losing patience with the recurring nature of these incidents. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that while previous indiscretions were dealt with as minor breaches, the current situation demands a more aggressive stance. Saikia revealed that the board is preparing an advisory to be issued to all franchises, serving as a final warning.
“This time, we have observed various anomalies and irregularities in the conduct of certain franchises and players,” Saikia stated. “We have also seen that certain team owners and officials are mingling with players in areas where it is not allowed. So there are certain protocols we have to follow, and we have seen there are some dilutions.”
Addressing the Culture of Access
The core of the issue lies in the excessive access granted to individuals who are not part of the official team composition. The presence of unauthorised people in hotel rooms and team transport complicates the environment, making it difficult for the ACSU to ensure that players remain insulated from external pressures or potential corruption. The BCCI’s upcoming advisory aims to strictly enforce the boundary between team operations and external influence.
Saikia made it clear that the era of leniency is over. Any future violations, once the advisory is released, will be met with “very stringent action.” This includes potential sanctions against team owners and disciplinary action against players who fail to adhere to the established protocols.
Restoring the League’s Reputation
The IPL has long prided itself on being the gold standard of professional T20 cricket. Incidents like the recent vaping controversy involving Riyan Parag, coupled with these broader security concerns, have forced the BCCI to pivot toward a more authoritative governance style. By tightening the grip on PMOA access and demanding higher standards of conduct, the board hopes to ensure that the remainder of the 2026 season remains focused solely on the cricket played on the field.
