Ollie Robinson Ready for England Test Recall After McCullum Signal

After a period of uncertainty both on and off the field, Ollie Robinson feels he’s entering the best phase of his career — and he’s eyeing a triumphant return to the England Test side. The Sussex captain has revealed that head coach Brendon McCullum personally reached out at the start of the county season to let him know the door remains open for a comeback.

From Fallout to Fresh Start

Robinson, 32, played the last of his 20 Tests in early 2024, finishing with an impressive return of 76 wickets at an average of 22.92. Despite those numbers, his international career appeared to stall after tensions emerged between him and the England leadership group — including McCullum and captain Ben Stokes — following the tour of India.

Now, however, the narrative is shifting. England, searching for leadership and reliability in their bowling attack after inconsistent performances during the 4-1 Ashes defeat, are reconsidering experienced options. Robinson, along with Essex’s Sam Cook, has emerged as a top contender to anchor the seam unit alongside faster bowlers.

Strong County Form and Leadership

This season, Robinson has taken 11 wickets at 28.54 for Sussex — a figure slightly inflated by a tough 1 for 99 against Surrey at the Kia Oval. But his all-round contribution has been undeniable. He scored his second first-class century — an unbeaten 100 off 190 balls — to rescue Sussex from 92 for 7, showcasing grit and technical maturity.

Meanwhile, Cook, who has 15 wickets at 21.73, remains in the frame. But Robinson’s leadership as Sussex captain and his proven Test record give him an edge in the selectors’ eyes.

Personal Clarity Fuels Comeback Bid

Robinson admits his focus has never been sharper. After a turbulent 2023 that included a personal breakup and public scrutiny over his podcast with fiancée Mia Baker — which led to the ECB requesting content be taken down — he now feels mentally refreshed.

“I fell out of love with the game,” Robinson confessed. “It took me a while to get back to where I wanted to be. I’ve got the love for cricket back… I just feel refreshed, like I’ve got another chapter to give.”

He is now married to Baker, a golf influencer, and the couple are expecting their first child. “My mind is on cricket and nothing else,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of clarity now.”

Fitness Concerns Addressed

A major hurdle in Robinson’s last Test appearance — the Ranchi match against India — was a back injury suffered while batting, which limited him to just 13 overs and contributed to England’s series-defining loss. At the time, questions were raised about player conditioning.

But Robinson insists he’s in better physical shape than ever. His century and a resilient 42 in a long second innings after 158.2 overs in the field demonstrate improved endurance. “I’ve trained harder,” he said. “Mentally I’m clearer, with less baggage. I probably feel more ready now than I did when I first got into the England team.”

Direct Messages from the Top

The encouragement hasn’t stopped with McCullum. Rob Key, England’s managing director, has personally watched Robinson at Hove and followed up with positive feedback: “Take wickets, knock the door down — there’s still a spot for you.”

Robinson revealed: “I didn’t realise the door was still open. I thought it was closed. That’s definitely spurred me on this season.”

The Path Ahead

England’s squad for the two-Test series against New Zealand will be announced the week of May 18, with the first Test at Lord’s on June 4 — the same venue where Robinson made his debut against the same opponents in 2021. History could be repeating itself.

“I’ve got no issues with Stokesy or Baz,” Robinson said. “Whatever happened in India… we’ve never really ironed it out, but the message is clear: perform, and you’ll be back.”

With form, fitness, and favour from the top, Ollie Robinson is knocking — and this time, the door is already ajar.
