The Price of Haste: Rashid Khan Reflects on His Recovery

For one of the world’s most formidable spinners, the road back to the top has been far from smooth. Rashid Khan, the backbone of the Gujarat Titans bowling attack, has finally opened up about the physical toll of his recent past. In a revealing admission, the Afghan superstar acknowledged that his decision to rush his return to the field following back surgery was a significant misstep that hampered his performance throughout the previous year.

After a difficult 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign, where he managed only nine wickets in 15 appearances, the contrast this year is stark. In the 2026 season, Rashid has reclaimed his status as a match-winner, already claiming 15 wickets in just 11 matches.

The Mistake of Returning Too Soon

Rashid explained that the pressure to represent his national team, Afghanistan, led him to truncate his rehabilitation process. “When I had surgery, I took only two months to get back on the field, and that was something that I did in a hurry,” he stated. “I felt that time I made a huge mistake, to be in the centre that soon, but I had to come back for Afghanistan and play those games.”

The impact of that decision was evident on the cricket pitch. The fluidity and consistency that have defined his career were missing, leaving him vulnerable and less effective against top-tier batting lineups. However, a crucial period of rest following the conclusion of last year’s IPL provided the reset he desperately needed. By dedicating two to three months to focused fitness training and rehabilitation, Rashid was able to address the mechanical imbalances in his bowling action.

Rediscovering the Rhythm

Rehab, while grueling, allowed Rashid to recalibrate his approach. “I think the rhythm, I go through the crease, I think that was something I was missing,” he noted. “After that, I had a good time in the centre and I had a good 100-ball competition and then just kept on.” This methodical buildup helped him rediscover the technical nuances of his leg-break, which were on full display during his recent heroics in Jaipur.

A Masterclass Against Rajasthan Royals

The true measure of his return to form came in a high-stakes clash against the Rajasthan Royals. With the Royals chasing a mammoth 230-run target and scoring at a blistering run rate of 12.28, the Gujarat Titans needed their strike bowler to intervene. Rashid entered the attack in the seventh over, immediately sensing the conditions of the Jaipur surface.

“Yeah, the moment I bowled the first ball, I knew that there is something for me,” Rashid remarked. His tactical intelligence was on full display as he dismantled the middle order. He dismissed Dhruv Jurel with a sudden increase in pace and then bamboozled Donovan Ferreira with a sharp leg-break that crashed into the stumps.

Rashid emphasized his tactical philosophy during the match: “I was trying to mix it up and hit the right area consistently, and don’t leave the stumps. I feel like if I leave the stumps, it becomes easier for the batter to take a single or hit it for a boundary, but the most important part was, for me, that, yes, I want to hit the length, but more important it’s the line, and it should be on those three stumps.”

Mental Clarity and Execution

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his four-for-33 performance was his ability to pre-empt the batter’s movements. When preparing to bowl to Ferreira, Rashid had already mapped out the delivery in his mind. “I had that in my mind. I made that movie in my mind before that. I feel like if I pitched it in the right area, there is some help, and I can get that wicket. So as soon as it went from my hand, I knew it’s going to come.”

By removing both Shubham Dubey and Ravindra Jadeja, Rashid effectively stifled any hope of a Rajasthan Royals comeback, leading the Gujarat Titans to a commanding 77-run victory. His return to form serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of patience in recovery, proving that even for elite athletes, the body requires time to heal before it can once again operate at its peak potential.
