A Difficult Journey to Healing

The Indian cricket fraternity has rallied behind former national selector and fast bowler Salil Ankola, who is currently undergoing treatment for severe depression. The 58-year-old, who previously served as a colleague to Ajit Agarkar during his tenure on the BCCI selection committee, voluntarily checked into a mental health and wellness center near Pune two weeks ago.

The news, which has drawn concern from fans and colleagues alike, highlights the ongoing importance of mental health awareness within professional sports. According to his wife, Ria Ankola, the decision to seek professional help was a proactive measure taken after Salil struggled to process the profound grief following the death of his mother in October 2024.

Family and Support System

Ria Ankola provided an update on his condition, emphasizing the family’s support and Salil’s commitment to his recovery. “Salil was very upset ever since he lost his mother in October 2024 and was unable to process her passing away,” she shared. “Recently, when he saw himself breaking down and falling sick often, he chose to get himself treated in a good place and in a peaceful environment.”

She further clarified that Salil is currently on a positive path to recovery. “We, as a family, are very happy that he has chosen to take a break instead of completely breaking down. He is recovering very well, working out regularly, and will be back in no time to his first love, which was, is, and will always be cricket. He has always been a fighter.” Ria also expressed gratitude toward the BCCI and the wider cricket community for their kindness and support during this challenging period.

A Career Defined by Resilience

Salil Ankola’s life has been marked by significant challenges and reinventions. His international debut in 1989 against Pakistan in Karachi remains a historic moment in cricket lore, as he shared the field with legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis. Throughout his career, Ankola demonstrated grit, representing India in one Test match—where he claimed two wickets—and 20 One Day Internationals.

Domestically, he was a stalwart for Mumbai, taking 181 wickets across 54 First-Class matches. However, his playing career faced an abrupt end in 1997 at the age of 28 due to a challenging health battle involving a chin tumor. Rather than succumbing to the setback, Ankola transitioned into a successful career in the entertainment industry, appearing in numerous films and television serials.

Transition to Administration

Beyond his playing and acting days, Ankola dedicated himself to the administrative side of the sport. He served as the chief selector for Mumbai from 2021 to 2023, subsequently elevating his role to the national stage. Between January 2023 and August 2024, he played a pivotal role as a BCCI national selector, working alongside prominent figures in the game, including Ajit Agarkar. His recent work as a cricket commentator has also kept him closely connected to the pulse of modern Indian cricket.

The current phase of his life is not about the stats or the limelight, but about personal well-being. By choosing to prioritize his mental health, Ankola serves as a reminder that even those who have faced immense pressure on the international stage are not immune to the struggles of life. The outpouring of support from the cricket community underscores the respect he has garnered throughout his multifaceted career. As he focuses on his recovery, the primary hope remains that he will eventually return to the game he loves with renewed strength and peace of mind.
