Vijay Shankar Bids Farewell to Indian Cricket to Explore Global Opportunities

In a surprising development that has caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts across the country, Indian batting all-rounder Vijay Shankar has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) and domestic cricket. The 36-year-old cricketer has decided to step away from the Indian circuit to pursue fresh opportunities and maximize his playing time on the global stage.

Shankar’s decision comes in the midst of the ongoing IPL 2026 season. The veteran all-rounder, who is not featured in any of the squads for this year’s IPL, has determined that now is the perfect time to shift his focus outward. This retirement opens up doors for him to participate in prominent franchise tournaments worldwide, including South Africa’s SA20, the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20), and Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).

An Emotional Goodbye: “Cricket is My Life”

Following his decision, Vijay Shankar shared a moving and emotional note, looking back at his twenty-five-year association with the sport. He expressed profound gratitude for his journey, which saw him rise from a young aspirant to representing the nation at the highest level.

“Cricket is my life. I started playing when I was 10, and 25 years later, I am grateful and blessed to have played at every level and to the highest level. Representing our country will always be one of my proudest and happiest moments,” Shankar wrote in his farewell statement.

Reflecting on his next steps, he emphasized his desire to keep playing active cricket in new environments. “I have decided to retire from playing domestic cricket and IPL to pursue new opportunities and play more cricket. Thank you will not suffice for letting me do what I love. Eternally grateful,” he added.

A Look Back at His Domestic and International Journey

Vijay Shankar’s final appearance in Indian domestic cricket came earlier this year on January 29, 2026. Representing Tripura, he played his last match against Gujarat in a Ranji Trophy 2025-26 fixture. Over his long career, Shankar was a mainstay for Tamil Nadu, contributing significantly to their white-ball successes before moving to Tripura for his final domestic season.

At the international level, Shankar’s career reached its absolute peak during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. His final match for the Indian national team was a group-stage encounter against the West Indies on June 27, 2019, played at the historic Old Trafford ground in Manchester.

The Transition to Global Franchise Leagues

During his IPL career, Vijay Shankar featured for multiple teams, showcasing his versatility as a middle-order batsman and a handy medium-pace option. In the previous season, he represented the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). By formally retiring from all formats of BCCI-regulated domestic cricket and the IPL, Shankar becomes eligible to secure the necessary clearances to play in foreign T20 leagues as a free agent.

With leagues like the SA20, ILT20, and BBL constantly seeking experienced all-rounders who can stabilize an innings and chip in with the ball, Shankar’s extensive experience makes him a valuable asset. This strategic transition marks a new chapter for the all-rounder as he prepares to showcase his skills to a global audience in the coming months.
