Rishabh Pant Stands Tall Amid Lucknow Super Giants’ Struggles

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) may have been officially knocked out of the race for the IPL 2026 playoffs, but captain Rishabh Pant is refusing to let a disappointing season break the spirit of his squad. Following LSG’s ninth defeat in 13 matches, a defiant Pant delivered a passionate, unfiltered defense of his team’s capabilities, insisting that their current standing in the lower half of the points table does not reflect their true caliber.

When asked how he was approaching their final match of the season against Punjab Kings on Saturday, Pant did not hold back. “We are a f**king good team,” Pant stated. “We are proud as a team regardless of how our situation is right now. You know, the kind of team we have, we know we can win this. Regardless of anything we are confident enough as a team and as individuals. It hasn’t gone our way and everyone knows that but that doesn’t take away the fact that we are a f**cking good team.”

What Went Wrong for LSG in IPL 2026?

While Pant’s confidence remains unshaken, there is no denying that LSG’s campaign has been plagued by inconsistency. The team’s batting lineup, which promised so much on paper, has struggled to find its rhythm throughout the season. Pant himself has endured a quiet run of form with the bat, failing to provide the explosive match-winning innings he is renowned for.

The supporting cast has also struggled to find momentum. Big-ticket players like Nicholas Pooran have been uncharacteristically off the boil, leaving the middle order highly vulnerable. Even Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who recently found some form with a spectacular century and backed it up with a fighting 96 on Tuesday, suffered from a very slow start to his IPL campaign. LSG Team Director Tom Moody openly admitted that the underperformance of their middle order was the primary reason the franchise repeatedly found themselves struggling at the bottom half of the points table.

The Rajasthan Royals Onslaught

LSG’s recent clash against Rajasthan Royals highlighted the immense pressure their bowling unit has been under. On a flat surface that offered very little margin for error, LSG’s batters managed to put up a competitive total, setting a daunting target of 221 runs. However, the bowling department was quickly blown away by a sensational opening partnership from the Royals.

RR’s young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played a blistering knock of 93 off just 38 deliveries, while his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed a quickfire 43 off 23 balls. The pair decimated the LSG attack in the powerplay, quickly racking up 75 runs and taking the game completely out of LSG’s grasp.

Pant Explains Tactical Decisions and Matchups

Defending his bowlers after the heavy defeat, Pant emphasized how difficult it is to contain modern batters on flat tracks. “Sometimes, you know, it is hard,” Pant explained. “On a wicket like this, there is less margin for the bowlers, you know and just having too many suggestions doesn’t work you know. Sometimes you have to keep a simple plan and keep focusing on that one ball at a time and try to execute that plan.”

Pant was also questioned about his tactical decision-making, specifically why left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed was held back until the final over of the match, when Rajasthan Royals required just two runs to secure victory. With well-set left-handers dominating the crease, Pant explained that he wanted to shield the spinner from a bad matchup, relying instead on Digvesh Rathi, who finished with figures of 4-0-38-0.

“Definitely, the left-handers. They had been batting for a period of time. And exposing a left-arm spinner, I didn’t want that, because Digvesh Rathi was in the side. So why take chance on Shabby when Rathi is there, for sure,” Pant noted.

Looking Ahead to the Final Hurrah

With their playoff hopes officially over, LSG’s final match of the season against Punjab Kings on Saturday is now a battle for pride. For Pant and his squad, it is an opportunity to prove his words right and show the cricketing world that they are indeed the “f**king good team” he believes them to be. While the season did not go to plan, a strong finish could lay the foundation for a much-needed rebuild ahead of the next edition of the IPL.
