‘Predictable’ – GT’s bowling is ‘a bit like SRH’s batting,’ says Tom Moody – Tom Moody Critiques GT Bowling Predictability After IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 Loss

The Tactical Dilemma Facing Gujarat Titans

In the high-stakes environment of the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1, the Gujarat Titans (GT) faced a brutal reality check against a rampant Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) top order. As the dust settled on a challenging night in Dharamsala, the conversation shifted from the result to the underlying tactical shortcomings of the Titans’ bowling unit. Figures of 7-0-100-2 between Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj tell a story of a team stripped of its primary weapon: control.

The Moody and Rayudu Verdict

Tom Moody, the global director of cricket for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), did not mince his words regarding the Titans’ approach. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut, Moody drew a fascinating parallel between the Gujarat Titans’ bowling and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batting lineup. He argued that just as SRH struggles when the ball moves around, the Titans become vulnerable when the pitch offers no assistance.

“When there’s zero movement in the surface, that’s when they’re vulnerable, because they don’t have the real extreme change-ups of pace and variety,” Moody observed. “They become predictable. It is a bit like Sunrisers. As soon as they are put on a surface that is doing a bit, that batting lineup really struggles. It is the complete opposite for GT.”

Ambati Rayudu echoed these sentiments, pointing out that the team’s reliance on hard lengths and swing bowling—successful in the fortress of Ahmedabad—often leaves them without a ‘Plan B’ on flatter surfaces. “You know what to expect against GT,” Rayudu noted. “And when good batsmen, like what RCB have, know that this is the kind of bowling that is going to come at us, they are prepared for it.”

Lack of Variety and Deception

The core of the issue, according to the panel, lies in the lack of tactical flexibility. On a flat Dharamsala track, the Titans failed to utilize the nuanced deception required to stifle world-class power hitters. While the bowlers possess slower balls, these are not their primary weapons, and they failed to deploy them effectively under pressure.

RCB took full advantage of this, racing to 76 in the powerplay. The destruction was systematic, with Venkatesh Iyer, Devdutt Padikkal, and Virat Kohli striking at phenomenal rates. The onslaught only worsened as Rajat Patidar dismantled the attack with an unbeaten 93 off just 33 balls, leaving the Titans with no answers.

The Toss and Strategic Rigidity

A significant point of contention following the match was the decision to field first. While previous results in Dharamsala suggested chasing was the preferred route, Rayudu argued that the Titans should have leaned into their identity as a defensive, bowling-first side.

“I told a friend yesterday that GT’s best chance was to lose the toss,” Rayudu explained. “A team that has limitations must play within them. They should not overdo things just because it is a playoff. Just do your little bit and then let your bowlers—the best part of your team—go out there and try to defend. If I can’t land a punch and I can kick, I should only kick. Why try to land a punch? You must do what you do best.”

This philosophy, famously championed by former greats like Ricky Ponting, emphasizes putting runs on the board when under pressure. For the Titans, the loss serves as a harsh reminder that in the volatile arena of T20 cricket, tactical rigidity is often a precursor to defeat. As the tournament progresses, the challenge for GT will be to evolve their arsenal, ensuring they have more than just a single, predictable plan to neutralize the modern T20 batter.
