IPL 2026: Analyzing Chennai Super Kings’ Underwhelming Campaign

A Season of Discontent for the Super Kings

The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season has drawn to a close for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and the mood surrounding the franchise is far from celebratory. Despite finishing with 12 points and a seventh-place standing, the sentiment from analysts and team management remains divided. While CSK bowling coach Eric Simons suggests the team has ‘learnt a lot about ourselves as a unit,’ former cricketer Abhinav Mukund holds a much more critical view of the season.

The Verdict: An Average Performance

Abhinav Mukund did not mince words when assessing the performance of the five-time champions. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show, Mukund argued that the team suffered from a lack of identity, particularly at their home fortress. ‘They had a very average season throughout with them not knowing their strengths at home, because that is something that they take pride in,’ Mukund stated. He noted that in their successful campaigns, CSK has historically possessed a clear understanding of their squad composition and tactical advantages, both at Chepauk and on the road.

Injury Woes and Tactical Disruption

A significant portion of CSK’s struggles can be attributed to a relentless injury crisis that plagued the squad from the outset. The absence of MS Dhoni due to a calf injury was a major blow, but the lack of stability extended further. Key pace spearhead Nathan Ellis was ruled out before the tournament began. Throughout the campaign, the team lost vital contributors including Ayush Mhatre, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Jamie Overton. The loss of Overton, in particular, was described by coaching staff as a turning point that robbed the team of a vital balancing factor in both the bowling attack and the lower-order batting.

Eric Simons emphasized the difficulty of managing a squad that never truly found its rhythm. ‘I think that’s an important part of winning an IPL, that you get your balance right… your changes are made a long way before the game – not because someone’s out of form but because you’re moving into a particular condition,’ Simons noted. He acknowledged that while the season was difficult, emerging talents like Kartik Sharma provided a glimpse of the future.

The ‘False Dawn’ of Momentum

CSK’s season was defined by extreme inconsistency: an initial three-game losing streak, followed by six wins in eight matches, and a final three-game collapse. Mukund dismissed the mid-season surge as a ‘false dawn,’ pointing out that the victories were primarily against teams that were not part of the league’s top-tier contenders. According to his analysis, the side struggled to shift the needle against the top three or four teams in the table, revealing a clear gap in quality.

Strategic Missteps in Recruitment

Looking ahead, the discussion turns toward the team’s recruitment strategy. Following a dismal 2025 season, the management made bold moves, including the high-profile trade of Sanju Samson. While Mukund deemed the acquisition of Samson a success for addressing top-order concerns, he raised red flags regarding the team’s depth and overseas strategy. He argued that there was a fundamental disconnect in the selection of backups during the auction.

‘I feel that there was a disconnect in the replacements that they picked as well or the back-ups that they picked in the auction,’ Mukund explained. He highlighted the need for a total rethink regarding the overseas roster. While he remains optimistic about the potential of the young Indian core, he insists that the franchise must refine its approach to overseas reinforcements to ensure the squad is equipped to handle the rigorous demands of a full IPL season. For CSK, the 2026 season serves as a stark reminder that even the most successful teams must constantly evolve to survive in the ever-competitive IPL landscape.
