The Rise and Transition of an U19 Star
The Indian Premier League (IPL) and various franchise-based T20 leagues have revolutionized the financial landscape for young cricketers. Players like Hardik Pandya, Prithvi Shaw, and Rinku Singh have seen their lives transformed through these platforms. Among those who burst onto the scene with immense promise was Manjot Kalra, a standout performer during India’s victorious 2018 Under-19 World Cup campaign in New Zealand.

While Prithvi Shaw became an overnight sensation, he was not the only starlet to benefit from the U19 success. Following the tournament, the Delhi franchise—then known as Delhi Daredevils—secured the services of talents including Shaw, Abhishek Sharma, and Manjot Kalra. While Shaw and Sharma went on to carve out significant professional paths, Kalra’s journey took a more complex turn despite his early brilliance.
The Potential and the Pitfalls
Kalra’s talent was undeniable. In the 2018 U19 World Cup final against Australia, he delivered a masterclass with a match-winning century. He finished the tournament with an impressive 252 runs across five innings at a staggering average of 84.00. However, his professional trajectory faced a major hurdle when he was implicated in an age-fraud case by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This resulted in a one-year suspension in 2020. Though the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) later lifted the ban, the interruption left a lasting impact on his career, and he featured in only a single Ranji Trophy game for Delhi in 2021.
A New Innings as a Franchise Owner
Today, Manjot Kalra has pivoted toward new horizons. Beyond running his popular YouTube channel, Second Innings with Manjot Kalra, he has made headlines for his entry into cricket administration and ownership. Alongside entrepreneur Mayank Goel, Kalra has acquired the Jaffna Kings, the most successful franchise in the history of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), ahead of the 2026 season.
Reflecting on this transition, Kalra stated, “Jaffna Kings is a franchise with a strong cricketing identity and a passionate fan base. For us, this is an opportunity to bring together our experience in cricket, youth engagement, sports content, and community building to support the next phase of the team’s journey.”
A Legacy of Dominance for the Jaffna Kings
The Jaffna Kings represent a significant asset in the LPL landscape, having clinched four of the five titles since the league’s inception in 2020. The franchise has seen various ownership changes throughout its tenure. Originally known as the Jaffna Stallions, the team underwent restructuring due to financial challenges. In 2021, the Lyca Group took control, rebranding the team as the Lyca Jaffna Kings and managing them for four seasons. Their tenure concluded ahead of the 2025 season due to failure to meet contractual obligations.
With the acquisition by Kalra and Goel’s Sports Commune, the team enters a fresh era. The LPL 2026 season is scheduled to take place from July 8 to August 8, 2026, with the player draft set for May 23. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see how this transition influences the competitive spirit of one of the most successful franchises in the region.
Looking Ahead
As the cricket world evolves, seeing former players step into ownership roles provides a unique perspective on the sport. For Manjot Kalra, the move from the pitch to the boardroom represents a commitment to the game that once defined his early years. With the LPL 2026 preparations underway, the focus now shifts to whether the new ownership can maintain the high standards of excellence that the Jaffna Kings have established over the years.
